Durham Bulls
A minor league baseball team, Durham Bulls is based in Durham, North Carolina. The team was founded in 1902 and plays in the International League. Durham Bulls are the Triple-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays major-league club. The team plays their home games at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park that is situated in downtown Durham.
In 1988, the team became internationally famous after the release of the movieldquo;Bull Durham”. All in all, Durham Bulls Athletic Park is a great place to watch a baseball game and is certainly one of the finest ballparks in minor-league baseball. In the very beginning the team was known as Durham Tobacconists and had its first game in the North Carolina League against the Hornets.
As the North Carolina League was folded in July, the team re-formed as the Durham Bulls in the North Carolina State League. During their first game they defeated the Raleigh Capitals. Later on, the Bulls joined the Piedmont League when the North Carolina State League also folded due to the World War I.
In 1932, the team became affiliated with the National League's Philadelphia Phillies. In 1945, a second Carolina League formed, and in the month of April the Bulls played their first game in the new league, defeating the Burlington Bees 5-0. The 1997 season was marked as last year in the class-A Carolina League and in 1998, the Bulls bacame Triple-A affiliate of the newly-formed Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and began play in the International League (IL). In September of 2002, the Bulls won their first IL championship after defeating the Buffalo Bisons 2-0.
